C'est Arthur Marwick qui, dans l'introduction à son Britain in the Century of Total War : War, Peace and Social Change 1900-1967. Londres : The Bodley Head, 1968, rappelle la formule de Trotski sur la guerre, "locomotive de l'histoire" et énonce la théorie de Test, Dissolution, Transformation qu'il voit à l'œuvre au cours des deux guerres mondiales que couvre son ouvrage : il paraît donc tout indiqué de commencer par lui, et par sa copieuse bibliographie, malheureusement arrêtée à 1968. Il revient vingt ans plus tard sur cette théorie, avec des aménagements, dans Total War and Social Change. Londres : Macmillan, 1988 (Introduction et Conclusion). Dans l'intervalle, les 'révisionnistes' avaient entamé leur travail de sape à l'encontre de cette théorie.
