            GUIDE BIBLIOGRAPHIQUE

 

Avant-Propos

 

Il est clair que, du strict point de vue scientifique, il est plus que souhaitable d'avoir "tout lu" pour pouvoir prétendre rédiger une bibliographie sur un sujet quelconque, mais il est bien évidemment illusoire d'espérer pouvoir répertorier tous les ouvrages qui ont trait à la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, même en s'en tenant à "La Société anglaise en guerre", ne serait-ce que parce que la clé du comportement de certains acteurs humbles ou célèbres au cours de ces années de guerre n'apparaît qu'à la lumière des événements de l'entre-deux-guerres et que d'autre part la période de guerre elle-même détermine pour une large part les comportements de l'après-guerre, l'importance à accorder à cette part faisant depuis lors l'objet de multiples ouvrages. Une première difficulté consiste donc à délimiter chronologiquement le champ bibliographique en sachant qu'en aucun cas les dates butoir septembre 1939-août 1945 ne peuvent être suffisantes. Le lecteur trouvera par conséquent dans les pages qui suivent des ouvrages qui pourront lui sembler a priori fort éloignés du sujet, mais il voudra bien faire confiance à l'auteur, qui les conseille en sachant qu'ils apportent un éclairage plus ou moins volumineux, mais toujours utile et intéressant, sur la question.

            Le deuxième écueil, c'est le volume même des témoignages et des documents qui peuvent être légitimement retenus comme source primaire sur ce sujet. Scientifiquement, même les témoignages "enjolivés" ou "exagérés" a posteriori ont de l'intérêt en ce qu'ils participent à la création ou à la perpétuation du "mythe". Les oeuvres de fiction romanesque appartenant ou non au genre "roman de guerre" méritent sans doute à elles seules une volumineuse bibliographie classée en "sous-genres", et là encore une démarche scientifique scrupuleuse ne saurait a priori éliminer la pulp fiction, qui elle aussi contribue à entretenir le mythe au sein des classes populaires, voire à faire le lit de l'anti-germanisme qu'alimente par ailleurs une presse "de caniveau" qui, cinquante ans et plus après la guerre, continue inlassablement de ressasser les mêmes stéréotypes. De surcroît, cette guerre est une guerre du XXe siècle, et la "chronique de la guerre" s'enrichit bien évidemment des documents primaires de tout premier plan que sont les oeuvres radiodiffusées ou cinématographiques - fictions et documentaires relevant probablement d'un classement différent, mais présentant les uns comme les autres un intérêt capital. Dans tous ces cas, le présent Guide - et c'est là que ce titre trouve sa justification - se contentera d'indiquer des pistes, des points de départ, qui fourniront au jeune chercheur les premiers éléments d'un corpus qui lui permettra d'explorer ces vastes champs de connaissance qui restent encore largement à défricher : on aura compris que c'est à lui qu'il s'adresse en priorité, tout en espérant que les mises à jour bibliographiques qu'il propose sur les terrains plus familiers pourront également bénéficier à des lecteurs plus chevronnés.

            Rédiger un guide bibliographique sur un sujet de cette nature, c'est faire de l'"historiographie" un peu comme M.Jourdain faisait de la prose, et notre hypothétique jeune chercheur pourra ou devra  constituer son corpus en tenant compte des fort judicieuses remarques formulées par Mark Almond et M.R.D. Foot dans The Oxford Companion to the Second World War à l'article "Historiography", qu'il semble tout indiqué de citer ici vu leur utilité pour quiconque veut entamer des recherches sur ce sujet :

 

            The movement of the war from memory into history is still far from complete. Many participants still survive, and help to keep the memory green. There is also a legacy of film and sound archive, which combines with the impact of feature films and documentaries on popular understanding to ensure that the perception of historical writings about the years 1939-45, and the audience for this history, are shaped by non-academic influences to an unusual degree for any historical subject. Since this war was even more 'total' than the First World War, with an unparalleled mobilization of women and non-combatant men for war work, the range and type of sub-histories which it has stimulated are broader than for any previous conflict. [...]

            In the affluent western world, commercial pressures have encouraged the diversification of historical and pseudo-historical writing about the war. There is not only a buoyant market for memoirs and anecdotal accounts of everyday wartime life, either in the armed forces or on the home front, but also a keen public appetite for sensation, readily filled by accounts of derring-do, some of them much more accurate than others. [...] The line between fact and fiction has become so hard to draw that a new use has been found for the word 'faction', to describe the conflation of the two. [...]

            A main difficulty for the historian is the work of sensationalists [...].

            Since the natural trend of all historical scholarship is revisionist, there has been a steady divergence between what academic historians have studied, argued, and written about controversial issues and the popular conclusions long since established. [...]

            Official histories, some inordinately long and some inordinately dull, but a few of fascinating interest, have been produced in quantity, particularly by the British and the Americans. [...]

            Civilians in the war have been the subject of much recent study in the West. [...] Some historians have seen the origins of post-war problems, such as juvenile delinquency, in the wartime years [...].

            The continuing boom in all manner of publications about the war shows no signs of abating. The study of historical writings about it has now itself become a specialized field ; there is plenty of room for criticism of previous historians' efforts. The collapse of the USSR in 1991, and the new techniques of oral and popular history, offer the chance for yet more fresh materials to come to light ; while the irresolvable debates on decades-old controversies will no doubt continue.

[Il est certes impossible de donner une définition indiscutable de ce qu'il faut entendre par "texte polémique", mais tous les commentateurs s'accordent pour reconnaître que deux grandes collections se sont spécialisées pendant les premiers mois de guerre et les quelques années qui ont précédé dans la "dénonciation polémique" de la politique suivie par le National Government, notamment lorsque Chamberlain était premier ministre. Ces ouvrages "polémiques" ont eu pour certains un retentissement considérable et ont largement contribué à la création d'une mentalité favorable au réformisme fondé sur le "plus jamais cela". L'unique reproche qu'on peut lui adresser, c'est qu'elle date de 1969 et n'a pas été remise à jour dans les dernières rééditions brochées [Pimlico Paperbacks 1995]. Fort utiles pistes également dans Marwick, Arthur : Britain in the Century of Total War. Londres : The Bodley Head, 1968.  Très copieuses indications bibliographiques, malheureusement dispersées dans les notes, dans le beaucoup plus récent et remarquable ouvrage (aux dates trompeuses dans le titre) de Peter Hennessy . B - Histoires officielles

 

On sait que le gouvernement britannique a fait rédiger par différents auteurs et publier par HMSO une très officielle History of the Second World War, tant du point de vue civil (U.K. Civil Series, edited  by W.K. Hancock) que diplomatique et militaire (U.K. Military Series, edited by J.R.M. Butler). Le volume de cette série qui a le plus marqué l'historiographie subséquente est sans conteste :

-Titmuss, Richard. Problems of Social Policy. 1950 [Le titre cryptique ne permet pas de deviner qu'il s'agit d'une étude exhaustive des problèmes liés à la "protection civile " en temps de guerre, au premier chef l'évacuation et l'organisation médicale et hospitalière. On peut dire que ce livre "lance" la théorie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale facteur de prise de conscience de la nécessité de la réforme sociale, très attaquée aujourd'hui par les "révisionnistes". A consulter en toute priorité.]

Londres : The Bodley Head, 1968, rappelle la formule de Trotski sur la guerre, "locomotive de l'histoire" et énonce la théorie de Test, Dissolution, Transformation qu'il voit à l'œuvre au cours des deux guerres mondiales que couvre son ouvrage : il paraît donc tout indiqué de commencer par lui, et par sa copieuse bibliographie, malheureusement arrêtée à 1968. Il revient vingt ans plus tard sur cette théorie, avec des aménagements, dans Total War and Social Change. Londres : Macmillan, 1988 (Introduction et Conclusion).
